Approach to Training

Search & Rescue (SAR) Services offers you a unique approach to Search and Rescue training that brings together the components needed to ensure all training programs are effective, thorough and specific-to-need. Proper training at the proper level is essential for the student to completely understand all of the components.

Search & Rescue (SAR) Services can develop training programs to fit your needs. Tell us what you want and we will create a training program to make your team the best it can possibly be.

Training Programs

On all of our Training Courses, great reliance is placed on "student participation". We believe that the "hands-on" experience, coupled with an "information rich" environment will provide the best atmosphere for learning. Each program will have a Student Manual, together with a brief notebook for your convenience in keeping notes. We limit the size of our classes to a maximum of 24 candidates and a minimum of twelve. During our practical exercises we abide by the "span of control" ratio of not less than 1 supervisor to seven candidates and we prefer a 1:5 ratio.

Prerequisites

A valid Basic First Aid Certificate is essential for any training program. All of our programs are designed to provide training in a sequential mode. Specifics are as follows:
Course Prerequisite
*  PSAR Basic
*  Map & Compass Basic, PSAR
*  Fundamentals of SAR Basic, PSAR, Map & Compass
*  Search Techniques Basic, PSAR, Map & Compass, FUNSAR
*  Incident Command System Basic, FUNSAR
*  Basics of Search management Basic, FUNSAR, Map & Compass, ICS
*  Search Management Basic, PSAR, Map & Compass, FUNSAR, ICS, Search Techniques
*  Planning Section Chief Basic, PSAR, Map & Compass, FUNSAR, ICS, Search Techniques
*  Human Tracking Basic, Map & Compass

Exceptions or "Grandfathering" is possible, depending on the candidate's experience, qualifications and the course being taken. Each Custom course will have different prerequisites. Above all, it is incumbent upon the candidate to be in good physical condition before undertaking any of the SAR training.

Facilities

All training programs take place at your facilities and we rely on the Sponsor of the course to provide those facilities. The instructional staff is available to travel to your location, no matter how remote, to provide either consultation or training.

Certification

All programs are run on a pass/fail basis and we have no give-a-ways. We actually place more emphasis on class participation and skills displayed during the actual or simulated exercises than we do on the written test. Marks are awarded as follows:
*  Class participation 20%
*  Work exercise 20%
*  Skills displayed 20%
*  Written test 40%
*  Total 100%
*  Passing grade 75%

Certification is presented at the conclusion of the course to the successful candidates.

Student Responsibility

The responsibility is on the student to give complete attention and to interact with the other students. We expect the students to show up on time and be fair to your fellow students. You will be informed, beforehand, of any equipment you will need to bring with you in terms of wearing apparel, equipment, notebooks, compass, etc.

Search & Rescue (SAR) Services is proud to present a wide variety of training programs available in both custom and scheduled format. Each of the various sectors of the Search and Rescue Universe will find some portion of this training applicable to their needs. These programs will interest those people involved with either fire service, ambulance, police, military, ski patrols, governmental personnel or that portion of the general public who have a desire to involve themselves in search and rescue work.

Message from Chief Executive Officer

There can be no doubt that one of the major needs of the Search & Rescue Universe is the necessity to develop appropriate response teams through necessary training. Experience has taught us that the recognizing of specific training has been a common failure throughout the entire Search & Rescue Community. Some countries have refused to accept the certification offered in other countries, some States have refused to accept certification offered in other States, Canada has very little certification to offer on Search and Rescue topics at all, and on it goes. We must recognize that any training is better than none and that people, particularly volunteers, do not just take this type of training for something to do. Sooner or later the entire Search and Rescue Universe must accept the fact that a Certificate is merely a piece of paper to suggest that a particular person has taken some particular type of training, the true measure of certification is what that person does with the knowledge he has gained from that training. What that person does is also a measure of the value of the particular type of training being taught.

It has been my experience that search and rescue personnel are among the most keenly motivated people anywhere and are often starved for knowledge and up-to-date training. It has also been my pleasure to see those same people take the training we have offered and watch them develop their skills. I know that, in most cases, the knowledge they acquire during our training courses will be shared with people who are on the job because they care!

There can never be a better time than right now to undertake training that will benefit you in your quest to help somebody else who is in trouble. Just stop for a moment and think; if your small child were lost in the woods, would you want someone who is qualified, well trained and experienced to conduct the search for that child, or would you be happy with someone who has had minimal or no training. If you have taken training in the past, are you satisfied that you are the best you can possibly be? If not take a look at our program. We can help you.
