Gordie first became involved in search and rescue in 1956 when the local Royal Canadian Mounted Police recognized his family's ability to follow tracks and ability to read a map and compass. In 1957 he joined the RCMP and left his native Nova Scotia to eventually take up residence in Fredericton, New Brunswick. During the 35 years he spent with the RCMP he participated in over 200 actual searches for lost people and supervised over 50 searches. In 1984 he was assigned the responsibility of Ground Search and Rescue coordinator for the RCMP for the Province of New Brunswick, was also given the responsibility of organizing and training volunteers throughout the Province. Almost singlehandedly he brought together over 500 volunteers from 12 different locations and acted as their Police contact until his retirement from the RCMP in June of 1992. Since retiring, he has founded and is the Chief Executive Officer of Search & Rescue Services, has written a book Safe and Sound on Survival and he holds certification (C) or appointments (A) in many areas of expertise relating to Search & Rescue and are as follows:
